Requesting credit reports

It’s that time of the year for me to request credit reports. I thought I’d share a little info on how I do it.
You can request one free credit report from each credit reporting agency every year. I try to spread mine out during the year (one credit agency every 4 months.)
You can find info on how to request your credit report here. You can do it online, call (toll free), or snail mail your request in. I use snail mail for mine since I have to include additional paperwork for my children (who are under 13 years of age.)
It turns out when requesting a credit report for a child that is under 13, you need to include the following:

  1. a request with your child’s complete name, address, date of birth
  2. a copy of the minor child’s birth certificate
  3. a copy of the minor child’s social security card
  4. a copy of your driver’s license or other government-issued proof of your identity (which includes your current address)
  5. a current utility bill containing your current address
